I would like to offer up a possible explanation for Obama’s seemingly un-American attitudes. He is certainly not one who wraps himself in the flag – about that, there can be no honest debate. He more often than not blames America whenever the opportunity to do so presents itself. The most recent of which can be found in his United Nations speech. Obama was quick to apologize for American unilateral actions of the past. In doing so, he is clearly attempting to wipe clean the slate and reach out to other countries who may have their noses out of joint over perceived American transgressions of the past. Iraq. Afghanistan.
It may be on Obama’s part just an effort to reach out to the rest of the world in good faith, rather than an “apology” for America’s actions. I would be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. But there is something troubling about this President. He seems strangely un-American. Before the left wing lunatics seize on that observation and become apoplectic over it, let me clarify – I did not say “anti” American. I said “un-American.”
Obama is unlike any previous president, and skin color is not what I am referring to, Janeane Garofalo & Jimmy Carter. I am referring to his attitudes. Attitudes, expressed through words and deeds, that seem to me to be strangely foreign, particularly for an American President. Maybe this is part of his appeal to the strange anti-America Americans – a crowd who I never have fully understood. Exclusively left-wing, this crowd, the “blame America first” crowd, seems to be gleeful about bashing America whenever and wherever the opportunity to do so presents itself. They clearly enjoy it. Which in and of itself is very strange – it’s an attitude that conservatives do not understand. Members of this crowd will cheerfully list every single infraction, no matter how slight or insignificant, made by America, while at the same time ignoring the very poor behavior of other countries. It’s a hallmark trait of the left – the NY Times, MSNBC, NBC, CNN, and countless lunatic left fringe web sites.
But back to the curious case of Barack Hussein Obama. The first (and hopefully, last) un-American President. A quick examination of his upbringing provides some clues. He spent 4 to 5 formative years in Indonesia – he had no father figure, his world was an mixture of cultures. Islamic, Christian, Asian and his heritage is the same – an blend of white and black, muslim and christian, Asian, African and American. He is truly the “metropolitan” President.
BHO therefore cannot relate to exclusively American culture – catching lightening bugs as a kid, playing with army soldiers in the dirt, watching Bonanza, Gunsmoke, I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, and so many other classic and uniquely American experiences. Road trips with the family, vacations at Disneyland, Howard Johnsons, Holiday Inns, baseball, football, BBQ’s – monopoly, Life, crazy eights – The Ten Commandments, Ben Hur, The Wizard of Oz, Monday Night Football, college football – Tom Sawyer, Huckelberry Finn – you get the picture. But Obama does not. It’s all uniquely American – patriotism, July the 4th, Thanksgiving – the Beach Boys, summer, drive in movies – all the things that bind us together with common experiences and American attitudes – are lacking in Obama.
This very curious President of America – hailed by the slobbering left wing media as the second coming of Camelot – and better yet, a black Camelot – a sophisticated, worldly, articulate agent of hope and change. An advocate of transparency. The anti-dote to Bush & Cheney. The left-wing elitists embraced him as one of their own – finally, a President worthy of their admiration, a President who to them was worldly, as opposed to American – funny thing with elites is that they are always hostile to America. Whoever heard of a pro-American University Professor? Doesn’t exist.
But this union of America & Obama isn’t working. There’s just not much in common. This is the foundational problem of the Obama administration. He doesn’t see what we see. He doesn’t feel what we feel. He doesn’t understand why we cannot relate to him. Neither does the left. So they (the left) reduce it to a matter of color – which of course it isn’t. It’s much more complex than that. Obama’s pigmentation has not a thing to do with it. His “foreign-ness” has everything to do with it. Ordinary Americans simply cannot relate to this un-American President. And vice versa.
I don’t think Obama, or the democrats for that matter, fully understand what all of the passion is about – he doesn’t understand the visceral dislike of radical left wing extremists by ordinary Americans. He doesn’t understand why a Van Jones would so inflame ordinary Americans. And contrary to the democrats, who would undoubtedly argue that it isn’t ordinary Americans, it is “right wing domestic terrorists” who have a problem with Van Jones and his ilk, it is ordinary Americans who are beginning to seriously question Obama and his choices. The polls prove it – more Americans now declare themselves conservative rather than liberal, precisely because ordinary Americans are comparing themselves to Obama and his people, and coming to the conclusion that, if that’s liberal, then I am conservative. It’s as if one of the spouses in a newly married couple wakes up one morning, looks over at his/her spouse lying next to him/her, and suddenly realizes, “I don’t really know you at all.” Hence Obama’s plunging polls.
The elephant becoming more and more apparent in the room is the result of many Americans beginning to believe that we married the wrong person. We have very little in common with him. And as we get to know him more, we are finding less and less to be optimistic about.
In short, the recognition that we have made one awful mistake is beginning to take root, not just with conservatives, but with ordinary, every day Americans. Our President is a stranger to us.
And that cannot possibly bode well for this administration of alleged hope and change.
